If you only think about California and sandy beaches when someone mentions surfing, we are here to change your mind. Croatia’s beautiful seaside is full of possibilities, and various wind-powered surfing options are surely among them. The perfect place to start or continue your summer breeze adventure is Pelješac peninsula.
Thanks to the Pelješac bridge that has made it super accessible, there’s never been a better time to spend your holiday on the blissful Pelješac Peninsula. Spend a relaxing holiday on Pelješac!
You will find Viganj village at the western side of Pelješac peninsula, just across the island of Korčula. Because of its geographical location, wind is an almost constant weather occurrence. While the ideal wind conditions are usually between June and August, May and September are also a good option. In the summer months you will mostly feel Maestral wind, a mild and constant breeze blowing from the northwest. Add reliable thermal winds to the equation and you get the perfect setting for surfing and sailing!
Viganj is highly recognised for its wonderful weather conditions, so it is not any wonder that many windsurfing competitions are being held here. Besides Croatian, Viganj has also hosted European and World championships at various disciplines in the past.
Every year in May, Viganj hosts The Croatian Open Windsurfing Championship and for the last six years The Czech Open Windsurfing Championship has also been held right here. The championships being open means that the other nations can also participate. If you would like to take part next year, we recommend staying in the nearby Aminess Grand Azur Hotel so you can fully prepare and rest.
f you have never tried windsurfing or even stepped onto the board, it doesn’t mean that you can’t! If you are an absolute beginner, it is recommended to have someone who can teach you the basics, guide you and offer help along the way. Since Viganj is such a popular surfing destination, you can sign up for windsurfing or kitesurfing school or take private lessons taught by experienced, professional instructors. You can also get radio controlled teaching and video analysis.
Whether you are a beginner or a professional, there is a wide range of equipment available to rent. From children to professional, pick and set your perfect combination from more than 100 boards and 80 sails.
If you are feeling adventurous, why not try both? There are, of course, some similarities and differences between the two sports. Both are wind-powered, use a board and require you to maintain a balance while battling with wind and water. Windsurfing is a combination of surfing and sailing, while kitesurfing is considered to combine elements of paragliding, surfing, windsurfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and wakeboarding. See whichever suits you best, both will surely raise your adrenaline level!
Although Viganj is the perfect surfing destination, it is a rather small village. If you would like to take on some extra activities, relax after a physically exhausting day or enjoy the nightlife, finding a place to stay nearby might be a better choice.
About 10 minutes away from Viganj by car but with significantly better accommodation capacity, Orebić comes to mind as an excellent solution. If yoga, cycling, wine tasting, children entertainment programmes or excellent food selection seems like something you would gladly add to your daily schedule, we suggest you have a look at Aminess Bellevue Hotel and Orsan Hotel. Relaxing before or after surfing in one of their rooms would definitely put wind in your sails!
