The Town of Supetar

Supetar, a lively port and the hub of Brač, is a town where historical heritage blends perfectly with the Mediterranean way of life. Narrow stone streets hide Roman mosaics and the impressive Church of the Annunciation, while hypnotising aromas of Mediterranean cuisine bid a warm welcome to local taverns (konoba). The town especially comes to life when the squares and the waterfront are filled with the sounds of festivals and cultural events.

History

Brač traces its history back to the Palaeolithic, and over the centuries it was ruled by the Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Austro-Hungarians, all of whom have left their mark in its culture and economy. Brač particularly flourished under Venetian rule when stonemasonry, viticulture and olive growing developed – activities that, along with tourism, remain relevant to this day.

Culture

Brač owes its cultural heritage to the centuries-old tradition of stonemasonry, olive growing and fishing, with a special place occupied by the world-famous snow-white Brač stone. In addition to its tangible heritage, consisting of numerous churches, monasteries and traditional architecture, the island is known for its intangible heritage – from unique church chants and folk songs to traditional crafts and gastronomy.

Activities

The island of Brač offers various activities to choose from – from exploring historic towns such as Bol and Supetar to adrenaline-pumping challenges on bike trails, hiking to Vidova gora or enjoying water sports on Zlatni rat and the northern coast of the island. Enjoy the adventure set in authentic Mediterranean scenery!

Cuisine

The gastronomy of Brač is an ode to authentic Mediterranean flavours. The island is known for dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients – olive oil, fish, lamb and aromatic herbs. Especially famous are specialties such as vitalac, a traditional lamb dish, and sir iz mišine, or cheesecloth cheese, that pair perfectly with indigenous plavac mali or pošip wines.
