Ideas for a perfect day trip from Makarska

18.02.2022.

Makarska is an ideal spot for a Croatian holiday - perfect location near Split and the islands, plenty of dreamy beaches, crystal clear sea, buzzing trendy restaurants and a vibrant atmosphere with tourists from around the world. This charming town, towered by a striking Biokovo mountain, is in itself one of the top picks on the Adriatic coast. But for anyone wanting more, whether you’re looking for an adventure, exploring local history, wine tasting or just soaking up magical views of nature, there’s more than enough opportunities to do so. To make your choice easier, we prepared a list of 3 ideas (and some extra tips!) for a perfect day trip in proximity to our new, luxurious Khalani Beach Hotel, opening this April.

Biokovo mountain

Active holiday with incredible views of riviera

Proximity from hotel Khalani: 22 km / ∼ 40 minute drive

This one's a classic and one of the most popular choices for tourists in this area. And there’s a good reason for that - nature park Biokovo truly offers something for everyone. It’s an ideal place for an active holiday, with 5 walking and hiking routes starting from Makarska, as well as opportunities for cycling and rock climbing. As the mountain rises directly from the sea, it has an unforgettable view of the entire Makarska Riviera, which can be enjoyed from several lookout points. And we kept the best for last - the incredible Skywalk, a semi-circular observation deck with transparent glass floors that hang from a cliff at 1288 meters. The thrilling experience of walking on it is accompanied by the view of the coast and the islands that is hard to describe - you’ll just have to witness it for yourself.

Brač Island

Island vibes and stunning beaches

Proximity from hotel Khalani: 12 km / ∼ 1 hour ferry ride

After you’ve seen Brač from the Skywalk deck, it might be time to see it up close. You can reach it quickly - just hop on a ferry in Makarska, and you’re there in an hour! The ride is quite cheap, as well as enjoyable because of the views of the shore and the mountain. The ferry will take you to Sumartin, a peaceful village of around 500 inhabitants, with a couple of traditional restaurants and some great beaches. This will be a perfect place to spend the day, but you can easily go exploring the island even further if you feel so. A 30-minute bus ride from Sumartin will take you to Bol, one of the most popular destinations on the island. Next to this charming city is the famous Zlatni rat beach, one of the top beaches in Europe and perhaps the main symbol of Croatian tourism. What’s so special about it? Well, its white pebbles, shady pine grove and a one-of-a-kind shape that changes with wind and sea currents.

Imotski

Countryside, unique lakes and fantastic wines

Proximity from hotel Khalani: 35 km / ∼ 40 minute drive

In case you’d like to experience a completely different ambiance form the coastal Mediterranean one, we got you covered. Imotski is an inland town surrounded by lush nature that will give you a different taste of Croatian tourism. The main attractions here are two lakes, which are truly pieces of nature’s wonders. The Red lake, which got its name from surrounding red rocks, is one of the deepest ones in Europe and can be observed from its super high cliffs. The Blue lake, named by the uniquely blue color of the water, is well known as one of the most beautiful ones in the county. The best view of it can be enjoyed from the ancient Topana fortress. Unlike Red lake, you can reach it with a brief hike and take a refreshing dip inside. But this is not all there is to Imotski! We recommend exploring the old town with stone buildings, discovering authentic food in local restaurants and, last but not least, taking a wine tour in one of the wineries - believe us, the wines from the town’s vineyards are truly fantastic.

Extra tips

Of course, this is not all. Here are a couple of extra ideas for an exciting excursion from Makarska:

  • Neighboring town of Omiš (35 minute drive) is a place where the Cetina river meets the sea. Explore its fortresses and combine this day trip with a rafting experience in the crystal clear waters of Cetina.
  • The second largest city in Croatia, Split, is just an hour away from Makarska by car and has a lot to offer. From simply having a drink on the city’s famous promenade (like the locals like to do daily), visiting the Diocletian’s palace from 305AD, to enjoying a walk to Marjan, a hill with perfect views of the city and the coast. And this is just a start!
  • Just 7 kilometers away from Makarska is the town of Tučepi, where, apart from endless beaches, you’ll get to enjoy an adventurous ride - a 700 meter long zip line with coastal views.

No matter if you are planning a lazy relaxing holiday or one filled with unforgettable adventures, Makarska will be a fantastic choice of destination. And the town will soon become even more exciting, with the opening of the exclusive Khalani Beach Hotel and its many extravagant features that are about to spoil your senses.

See you soon in Makarska!
