History

Where the sea routes intertwine

The earliest traces of human settlements on Krk date back to the time of the Illyrians, who built fortresses on the tops of hills. The island’s mild climate and plenty of arable land attracted first the Greeks, and then the Romans, who built baths, temples and military camps here. Christianity was adopted as early as the 5th century. From the 12th century on, there are records of the famous Croatian noble family Frankopan of Krk who owned a territory corresponding to a half of today's Croatia at the peak of their power. Many rulers reigned over Krk after their decline: from the Venetians, the French and the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia and presently Croatia.

Top 5 historic sites

  • The ancient Roman town of Fulfinum from the 1st century and the early Christian complex of Mirine near Omišalj from the 5th and 6th centuries
  • The Frankopan castle and fortified walls of the town of Krk

  • The Church of St Donatus, a magnificent building with a dome near Punat
  • The Church of St Jerome in Stara Baška, surrounded by a mesmerising landscape above the Zala beach

Culture

A story written in the glagolitic script

You will encounter unusual letters of the Glagolitic script, a Slavic alphabet created in the mid-9th century, across many island locations. The text engraved on the 12th-century Baška Tablet, valuable proof of Croatian literacy weighing an incredible 800 kilograms, is also written in the Glagolitic script. You are also bound to come across the traces of a family inextricably linked to Krk's cultural life – the Frankopan family. Throughout its 6th-century-long history on Krk, many Frankopans were awarded the title of ban or were famous writers and warriors. The family's former residence and castle can be visited in the town of Krk, where a number of events dedicated to the memory of this grand and influential family are organised.

Cuisine

Authentic flavours of the Krk island

The legend has it that the first barrel in the world was discovered on the nearby islet of St Mark. It therefore comes as no surprise that the people of Krk decided to fill their barrels with the excellent Vrbnik Žlahtina, a local white wine that many visitors cherish as their favourite souvenir. Žlahtina pairs perfectly with the Krk prosciutto and Magriž sheep's cheese, or with šurlice and makaruni pasta with wild asparagus, žgvacet sauce or shellfish. Make sure to save room for a dessert and try delightful fritule and kroštule literally melting in your mouth.

Top 5 dishes you simply must try

  • Krk prosciutto and cheese with a glass of Vrbnik Žlahtina
  • Šurlice or makaruni pasta with žgvacet sauce
  • Krk lamb
  • Kvarner shrimps
  • Wild asparagus
  • Presnac and povitica, traditional Vrbnik pastry

What will you do?

Biserujka Cave is located on the island of Krk 300 meters north-west of the Rudine village. The cave is adjusted to tourists and offers a wealth of cave decorations - calcareous sinters, stalagmites, and stalactites. According to a speleological classification, it represents a simple cave with mouth that lead into a gently sloping cave channel. Its underground areas include: Mouth, Balcony, Shaft, Great Hall, Northern Channel, Arched Hall and Cypress Hall.
Biserujka Cave is also known as Vitezićeva Cave. The lowest point of the cave was measured at -13 meters, and the bottom of the cave is only 30 meters above the sea level. The cave extends relatively shallow beneath the surface and its overlay never exceeds 6 to 8 meters. Bone fragments of a cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) were found in the cave.

In the deeper part of the cave variations of microclimatic parameters are minor; soil and air temperature is about 15.0° C with relative humidity of about 95%, which makes the cave environment quite enjoyable.
